Hydro-abrasive blasting: which process is actually meant?

'Hydro-abrasive blasting' is used to describe two genuinely different processes, and knowing which one you need matters before you specify equipment or a service provider.

Low-pressure hydro-abrasive blasting mixes water and abrasive media into a slurry, then uses compressed air to project it onto a surface in a controlled stream. This is the process more commonly known as wet blasting, vapor blasting, or liquid honing - it cleans, finishes, deburrs, and prepares surfaces for coating without embedding media or generating dust.

High-pressure hydro-abrasive blasting (also called hydro blasting, UHP water jetting, or hydrodemolition) uses water alone, or water carrying an abrasive, forced through a nozzle at extremely high pressure - often above 800 bar - to cut, strip, or demolish. It's the technology behind concrete removal, pipe descaling, and industrial coating stripping on large structures, and it works on a completely different principle: raw hydraulic force rather than a cushioned abrasive flow.

Why the low-pressure process suits manufactured components

Because the abrasive is cushioned by water rather than driven by raw pressure, low-pressure hydro-abrasive blasting can be dialled to remove exactly what's needed - a coating, a burr, a contaminant - without altering the underlying geometry or inducing heat distortion. That's the opposite goal to high-pressure jetting, which is built to remove material fast and doesn't need to protect fine tolerances.
