Jet engine component cleaning or peening by wet blasting

Jet engine MRO

As well as peening turbine and fan blades, wet blasting can be used to prepare the following engine components for NDT inspection by cleaning and / or coatings:

• Exterior surfaces like the outer casing of engines and other accessible exterior parts

• Fan and turbine discs

• Blisks

• Driveshafts

• Compressor blades and vanes

• Turbine blades and vanes

• Engine housings and casings

• Heat exchangers and cooling systems

• Engine mounts and structural components

As well as peening turbine and fan blades, blisks, drive shafts, discs, and other components can also be peened to improve strength.

Crucially, a different blast formula with a different blast media to that used for peening is used for cleaning and striping in preparation for NDT. Having said that, the same Vapormatt wet blasting machine can be used for peening, cleaning and / or stripping.

The blast formula for cleaning and stripping does not peen over cracks but cleans them so they are more visible during inspection.
